Marcel Breuer was born in Hungary. Before studying at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1920 to 1924, he worked for a short period of time at a Viennese architectural firm. After his "journeyman" examination, he became the leader of the furniture workshop; a position he was to retain when the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925. In 1928 he relocated to Berlin and opened his own architectural studio, his first of many. In 1935 he left Germany and first settled in London and in partnership with the architect F. R. S. Yorke, set up their own firm. He then worked and led the Design Department at Isokon. In 1937 he emigrated to the United States of America and received a teaching position as Professor at the School of Design at Harvard University, a position he held until 1946. Together with Walter Gropius, he established an architectural office in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1937. They both worked there until 1941. In 1946 he set up his own company in New York, Marcel Breuer & Associates and led it until his retirement in 1976.
