Charles Eames

Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri and studied architecture at the local Washington University. In 1936 he received a scholarship to the Cranbrook Academy of Arts, Michigan, where he later taught. His colleagues there were Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen and Ray Kaiser, whom he married in 1941. During World War II, he and his wife produced arm and leg rails as well as plywood stretchers for the US Navy. For this project, they had to develop a new method to form shift-glued plywood tri-dimensionally. In 1940 Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen won the competition "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" organized by the Museum of Modern Art. In 1946 the Museum of Modern Art dedicated its first solo exhibition to Charles Eames, entitled "New Furniture by Charles Eames". Charles Eames, Ray Eames and the producer Herman Miller worked in close collaboration and developed extremely modern yet practical furniture designs. They later turned their talents to film and photography as well as to the organization of exhibitions. The US Government and IBM were some of their customers.
